A Timeless Story of Misery, Depravity, Desire and Love

Johnny Handlebars, a Musical in two acts
at Kings Barcade, Saturday, November 20th, 2010

Intrigued by a band-mate’s dream, Brad Womack of TV Knife was inspired to write and direct Johnny Handlebars, a musical about being at the bottom. A cast of performers, including TV Knife themselves, will perform the full production, with intermission, at Kings Barcade, 14 W. Martin St., downtown Raleigh. Come follow Johnny’s journey from living in a bar to living behind bars, a story Frank Capra would have told were he an existentialist.

Rare Appearance From A Familiar Friend

Flesh Epic, NAPS, Lord Scrummage and Rapdragons
at The Berkeley Café Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Future Islands frontman, Sam Herring is taking advantage of his long stay in North Carolina preceding Hopscotch to take care of some unfinished business he has with his brother. They will be throwing down at The Berkeley, trading rhymes as Flesh Epic. Under his alias, Hemlock Ernst, you will get to witness the influence (one densely veiled in his Future Islands performances) that Hip Hop has had on Herring’s musical development. This is a must-see for any Future Islands fan as well as any fan of quirky, indie Hip Hop! Traveling with the pack are two other great urban-influenced acts from Detroit and Baltimore, Lord Scrummage and Rapdragons. Rounding out the night is local act NAPS.

Performing as a two piece this time around, Nathan Price (a.k.a. “Natty P.”) helps Raleigh’s NAPS bring the dream-drenched pensiveness of Daniel Michael to the stage. Sweet pop and psychedelic meanderings will ride right along with knob-twisting experimentalism the way only NAPS does.

Lord Scrummage’s music is primarily electronic, and recalls the sounds of groups like Animal Collective, but quickly veers off into uncharted musical territory. The songs are incredibly dense but at the same time so catchy that you’ll find it difficult to keep yourself from dancing around the room. They’re part of Scrummage University, an art collective of sorts that has been releasing rad records and putting on amazing shows (with bands like Prussia) in the sketchiest parts of Detroit for several years, and they’re ready to kick it in Raleigh!

Rapdragons is a hip hop phenomenon created by Nick Often and Greg Ward who met in Baltimore in 2008. Whartscape and Round Robin vets, Often and Ward spit fresh raps with enormous hooks that take you to the party, the block, and then over to the block party. They unleashed their independent debut record Ten Stories High in late 09 to local, regional, and bloggable acclaim. Now, they have just released their much-anticipated mixtape album, Featuring Baltimore, a collection of hip hop tracks each sampling a different band from Baltimore.
